Becoming a Parent through IVF Tijuana

IVF Tijuana treatment begins with a private consultation with one of our world renowned fertility specialists to discuss your fertility history and your expectations. There are several advantages to IVF in Tijuana. Eggs can be evaluated and fertilization can be confirmed in the lab, and there is more opportunity to influence sperm concentration.

Our IVF program takes place in an 18 day period that consists of the following (5 or 6 appointments, no overnight stays):

  • Day 1; start the treatment on the second day of your period
  • Days 9 to 10, ovarian stimulation protocol (ultrasounds must be done in order to see development)
  • Day 11, trigger shot
  • Day 12, egg retrieval and sperm sample retrieval
  • Days 13-17, 3 to 5 days for embryo to develop and be ready to transfer
  • Day 17 for embryo transfer
  • 1 or 2 extra days for rest

** Please note: Keep in mind that there are fertility tests to be completed before starting IVF in Tijuana. One month prior, the female patient must be on birth control pills to prepare the endometrium and follicles for the procedure.

***The schedule above is an estimate. Each patient is different and the doctor is the one who will establish your protocol.

Step 1 | Hormone Stimulation

During egg growth stimulation, you will be provided with medication, educated on the treatment cycle timeline, and taught how to self-administer the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) injections.

This process will further stimulate greater egg production, which allows our fertility specialists to maximize the number of eggs for a higher chance of achieving fertilization and pregnancy.

Throughout your treatment cycle, our professional fertility team will monitor you closely with regular blood tests and ultrasounds to measure the size and number of your ovarian follicles

Step 2 | Egg Retrieval

Once you have an optimum number and size of follicles we will plan your egg retrieval. You will have a trigger injection of hCG (human chorionic gonatrophin) and the retrieval will occur 36 to 38 hours later.

Egg retrieval is typically accomplished at our Tijuana Fertility Clinic under transvaginal ultrasound guidance. The process is performed under local anesthesia and takes 20-30 minutes.

On the morning of the egg collection your partner will need to provide a fresh semen (sperm) sample to immediately fertilize your eggs after collection.

Step 3 | Fertilization

Collected eggs are taken to the laboratory and placed in a culture medium in preparation of fertilization. The prepared sperm and eggs are combined in a dish where fertilization occurs. The better quality pre-embryos will continue to divide to the five-day stage, and are referred to as blastocysts.

During ICSI in Tijuana, which we detail below, an individual sperm is selected by a highly experienced embryologist, and, under very delicate microscopic control, the egg is injected with a precise single sperm.

Step 4 | Embryo Transfer

Three to five days after the IVF procedure is performed by our expert fertility specialists, you will return to the clinic for the embryo or blastocyst transfer. The embryos are transferred into the uterus through a very fine catheter passed through the cervix.

If there are any unused embryos, couples may choose embryo freezing to preserve the availability at a later time.

Progressive Results with Blastocyst Transfer Tijuana

A blastocyst is an embryo that has divided into many cells over the five-day period following egg retrieval. Blastocysts are a more advanced group of embryos, making them more likely to implant. Resultant of the higher implantation rate, our fertility specialists only require the transfer of two blastocysts to obtain exceptional pregnancy rates.

Our highly skilled embryology unit services vibrant efforts to sustain the process of embryo development to blastocyst stage. During the procedure, a special catheter containing the embryos or blastocysts is guided through the cervix, and the embryos/blastocysts are gently placed near the top of the uterine cavity.

We are constantly upgrading our equipment and seeking continuing education to ultimately translate this meticulous process into even higher pregnancy rate for our patients.

Advanced ICSI Tijuana Procedure

If you are diagnosed with male fertility problems, such as a low sperm count or an inability for the sperm to penetrate the egg, IVF is unlikely to result in fertilization.

Our fertility specialists, led by Dr. Medina, will familiarize you with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) treatment. ICSI can also be used if the male partner has previously had a vasectomy.

With the use of advanced micromanipulation equipment, a single sperm is injected into each egg. This is a meticulous procedure performed by our skilled embryologists.
